Founded in the 11thC by the saint after whom the town is named, Santo Domingo was built for the Compostela pilgrims and is one of the most important stopping points on the Way of St James. The cathedral's most unusual feature is a caged cockerel and hen which are central to the miracle that supposedly took place here and vistors in their thousands come each year to see them. Originally a 12thC hospital and resting place for pilgrims, this extremely stylish Parador with its stone arches and wooden beamed ceilings has an overall impression of quiet luxury and a real sense of history.
