Founded in Roman times, León is one of Spain's greatest cities. As well as having beautiful architecture and a cathedral with magnificent stained glass, it has a lively atmosphere, a good choice of inviting cafés, restaurants and bars, particularly in the plazas & old quarter, and one of the grandest Parador hotels in all Spain - the Hotel San Marcos. Totally casual and relaxed, there is a glorious vaulted bar that has an atmosphere of a British 'local', and every corner holds a surprise, from Roman sarcophagi, to glimpsed weddings being conducted in the chapel.
