This boating holiday starts from Sireuil and for 1 week trips a suggested route is to St Savinien and return. For 2 week holidays your cruise could take you firstly to Angoulême before returning to Sireuil then cruising as far as Rochefort and back. The locks on this river are manual so you are not restricted by timings.

The river Charente was described by François I as being the most beautiful in his kingdom. It was used as a means of transport from as far back as Gallo Roman times, when flat bottomed barges were loaded with salt, wine, brandy or stone.

Nowadays the Charente is popular for all kinds of boating, with good fishing, towpath walks and wonderful varied scenery, through farming country, vineyards, pretty villages and historic towns. As well as cognac, try the local pineau des Charentes, a liqueur made from a blend of grape juice and brandy.
