• La Couarde on Ile de Ré This relaxing island has all the ingredients for a perfect holiday. Only 5k wide and 28k long, it has a host of appealing beaches, the best of which are found on the south coast of the island. The very pretty harbour of the tiny capital, St Martin, is lined with shops and restaurants, and here you can find entertainment and boat and bicycle hire as well as a small beach. The island is reached by a magnificent bridge (toll about 17 euros return in summer for car and passengers) - an experience in itself.
  100m from the wide blue waters of the ocean, La Couarde has 65 apartments with outdoor pool. The cool pine woods of the forest of Henri VI are a couple of kilometres along the road, backing yet more lovely golden beaches.
• La Tranche sur Mer in the Vendée is one of the region's typical resorts with a fine sandy beach stretching for 13k, backed by pine woods - perfect for walks or cycling (a great opportunity to keep fit, or get fit!). There are also water-sports (sailing, surfing, wind-surfing) and boat trips - the town itself has a Mediterranean feel with narrow streets and whitewashed houses. For an interesting day trip the lovely port of La Rochelle is only an hour away. Originally built in 1880 with a domed tower, this colonial style residence is now converted into 45 attractive apartments, right on the beach (each has sea view) and close to the town centre. Facilities include heated outdoor pool, sun terrace, lounge/bar, breakfast room and lift.

And autumn is the perfect time for a break in France - all the crowds have gone and there's still plenty of fine weather to enjoy.
