Bars & Restaurants in Normandy

LE WAB LOBBY LOUNGE
This luxurious, ultra-chic venue is a combination of bar, pub and restaurant down on the docks. The decoration is made up of warm colours and white canopied sofas, in a subtle mix of wood and iron. The bar slides on rails to expand or contract depending on how many patrons it needs to accommodate.
The wine list features 120 wines from France, Chile and Canada. The list of whiskies runs to an impressive 30, and food is served at all hours.

GILL
True to its Norman roots, the menu at Restaurant Gill features local specialities with a new twist. The Dieppe Sole façon normande has cut down on calories and the cod steak makes only a flying visit to the frying-pan. This fine cuisine is based largely on seasonal market produce, creating scope for intriguing mixtures of colours and tastes. BR>On the quayside, near the cathedral, Restaurant Gill offers an intimate setting and a restrained decor full of light, picked out in the colours of Rouen, red and black.

RESTAURANT LA COURONNE
La Couronne is quite simply the oldest inn in France, built in 1345 on the former Place du Vieux Marché in the heart of the old town of Rouen. Over the years, the place has become a legend, and many famous figures have passed through its doors. From John Wayne to Grace Kelly, Sophia Lauren to Serge Gainsbourg, they are all remembered in the photo gallery.
Thanks to La Couronne's traditional and regional cuisine, discovering Normandy à la carte is a real pleasure. The well-stocked wine cellar offers the finest vintages, to be enjoyed in the luxurious, comfortable setting of this authentic half-timbered inn.

LE CHENEVIS
The building is in the purest Norman style, but the decoration at Le Chenevis is rather original: lots of wood, hand-made mosaic tables, chairs and other objects customised by Esgre Paillot, a local artist whose works are on permanent display in the restaurant.
Everything on the menu is organic: tea, fish, meat and vegetarian dishes, with something for all tastes in a range that leans heavily towards the home-made. Perhaps the vegetable pâté with malted grains will win new fans for the restaurant, which also serves teas Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.

LA TAVERNE PAILLETTE
The Taverne Paillette in the centre of Le Havre has been an institution for over fifty years. Regulars flock here to enjoy seafood and sauerkraut in a Bavarian-style setting of wood panelling and ceramic beer-mugs.
The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff professional and smiling. Try the Paillette beer, once again brewed in Normandy, as the perfect accompaniment to the traditional Alsace cuisine served here.

LA VILLA DU HAVRE
The aim of this restaurant is to bring gastronomy within everyone's reach and with just one philosophy: serving good food and being a good host. The 19th century house features a large period conservatory, now the smoking-room, with a view of the sea; the decoration is in shades of grey, the furniture of dark brown wood.
The cuisine can be defined in three words: "freedom, passion, emotion", well served by highly professional cooking skills.
If you're intrigued by what goes on behind the scenes, the chef holds a cookery workshop once a month (through to June) and the wine waiter offers tips on wine appreciation on the last Saturday of each month.

LE BISTROT DU CHEF DE GARE
Le Havre station is where you will find this charming bistro with its traditional brasserie-style decoration of red leather arm-chairs and bench-seats, and period photos hanging on the walls.
Once comfortably installed – the spaces between tables are generous – expect to enjoy good, simple cooking that is not without refinement. Terrine forestière served with onion chutney followed by a grilled entrecôte steak with béarnaise sauce make an excellent and satisfying choice.

LE BIDULE
Right in the historic town centre of Rouen, Le Bidule is one of a kind. The splendid vaulted cellar offers two distinct areas: one contains the dance-floor while the other, calmer and more intimate, offers an opportunity to relax quietly over a cocktail or a flaming shot.
The decoration is vaguely oriental with Moroccan lamps and upholstered arm-chairs. An exotic atmosphere in which to enjoy the house music that keeps the Bidule rocking until late into the night.

For three generations, Deconihout has been selling its ranges of household wares, from delicate indoor perfumes to decorative items, linen and furniture. The ground floor offers a classic range of hardware products, but the recently-opened first floor is astonishingly different. O DONNELL S
Right in the centre of Caen, on the Bassin Saint-Pierre where much of Caen's night-life centres, O'Donnells pub is a little piece of Ireland transplanted to Normandy. There is a wide choice of beers and other refreshing beverages on offer in this authentic, friendly bar when the temperature starts to rise.
Televised football and rugby matches, Friday night concerts and themed evenings are all good excuses for partying the way they do back in Dublin.

LE FRENCH CAFE
The bar is a reconstruction of a typical town square in Provence with an added flavour of the flea-market: items in the "junk-shop" section are actually for sale (old clocks, mirrors, chandeliers, juke-boxes, etc.), while clients at the bar take shelter under the branches of a tree whose branches disappear into the ceiling.
Try a "Vallée d'Auge" cocktail (calvados, praline and fresh cream) in the lounge area with its teak furniture, sofas, benches and pouffes, set off by mosaic tables and a real, old-time zinc bar counter.

PIZZA AMALFI
The names of the dishes alone reflect the Italian inspiration, from the saltimbocca (veal escalope with Parma ham) or the osso bucco (veal shanks). The menu offers at least 12 choices of pizza and several meat dishes, as well as some excellent Italian wines.
Atmosphere and music are designed to transport you to Italy, and to the town of Amalfi in particular, pictured in the frescoes adorning the walls. The pizza oven, the Holy Grail of any self-respecting Italian pizzeria, is on full view to customers in the restaurant itself.

LE P TIT B
The enormous fireplace is a welcoming feature of this 17th century building. The tall windows and the walls of Caen stone combine with the gentle background music to create a hushed, peaceful atmosphere.
This is a restaurant that breaks away from traditional cuisine. The inspiration for its sweet and sour combinations comes from Japan, as in the barbecued tiger prawns with ginger and peanuts.
The outside terrace looks onto the pedestrian street in the historic town centre, at the foot of the castle.

LA MERE POULARD
La Mère Poulard is an institution on Mont Saint-Michel: many are the famous names who stop by to taste its fine cooking, inspired by all that is best in Normandy. The decoration is top-quality contemporary, in honour of its illustrious diners and of its first great cook, Annette Poulard herself.
The chef keeps up the restaurant's traditions, such as the famous omelette de la Mère Poulard or lamb raised on the salt marshes. This is the gourmet restaurant par excellence on Mont Saint-Michel.

This high-class restaurant occupies a former beetroot press (hence its name) that was later transformed into a coaching inn. In an understated contemporary setting, its stone walls and table-lamps create a softly-lit romantic atmosphere. The food served at the Pressoir is a gourmet delight, based on highly creative cooking using local tastes and ingredients.
Scallops with truffles and foie gras cooked in a glass jar and the dark chocolate and praline crunch are the two best-known specialities of this charming restaurant.

LE QUAI DES MERS
Located in what was once the Trans-Atlantic Passenger Terminal, the restaurant is housed in a marquee which, with its passenger liner-style wooden decking, teak furniture and arm-chairs, gives a certain friendliness and intimacy. The cuisine is classic, mostly based on fish, including a justly famous fish sauerkraut or a home-made paella.
The view out to sea and over the nearby harbour entrance, coupled with the majestic proportions of the listed terminal building, is further enhanced at night by dramatic lighting. It would be easy to imagine yourself a passenger aboard one of the great trans-Atlantic liners, but this is a voyage of discovery to explore new tastes instead.

The aim of the establishment is to invite visitors to taste, to explain the quality of the products and to identify the differences between them.
