Region overview:

This rugged region consists of awe-inspiring volcanoes, lakes, rivers and forests, perfect for outdoor pursuits such as hiking and hang-gliding. With its profusion of volcanic springs, it is no surprise that Auvergne is famous for many varieties of mineral water, and if you are looking to simply relax there are ten separate spa areas to entice you. Five of these are rated amongst the top thermal resorts in the country.

The region is also blessed with magnificent Romanesque churches, medieval castles, plus the splendid Renaissance palaces in the capital Clermont-Ferrand. The famous regional cheeses, Bleu d'Auvergne and Cantal are just waiting to be sampled, so too is Pounti, a delicious local dish made from ham, eggs and vegetables. In the summer months a wide variety of village festivals with vibrant colour and charming folk-music can be enjoyed.
