Traveling by Train

Most of the 15,000km of rail track in Spain is run by RENFE, who operate a fast, modern intercity service (TALGO) throughout the Iberian Peninsula. All regional capitals are linked to a radial network of routes that centre on Madrid, making long distance travel a remarkably easy business. Just like Britain however, there are other varieties of train, notably the ferrobus, that stop at almost every station, so check carefully before boarding. RENFE fares in general are amongst the cheapest in Europe.

In addition to RENFE there are a few privately owned train companies, one of which serves the area of Green Spain particularly well. The operator FEVE runs a number of routes that pass through Asturias and Cantabria, stopping at many interesting places along the way. For visitors to the area without a car, or indeed others who would simply like a break from driving for a day or two, this rural service is a great way of getting about. FEVE have main enquiry offices in Santander, Oviedo and Gijon, each of which will gladly supply full details of routes and intermediate stopping points.

Bus services

The Spanish company ALSA operates a national network of routes, but with particular emphasis on the north-west of the country. Asturias, Cantabria and Galicia regions are particularly well served, with regular services linking all major cities and points of interest.
