Just as fast and even more frequent - The Normandie Express returns
Brittany Ferries' high-speed catamaran, Normandie Express roars back into action on 12 March when she starts her 2010 season of speedy crossings from Portsmouth to Cherbourg and Caen in Normandy.
This year Brittany Ferries is introducing the craft earlier in the season and offering more frequent departures than in previous years. This not ony caters for strong demand from passengers wanting to cross the Channel quickly from Portsmouth, but also compensates for the reduction in sailings between Poole and Cherbourg following the recent withdrawal of the conventional ferry, Barfleur.
Normandie Express takes just 3 hours to reach Cherbourg and 3½ hours to Caen so passengers can drive on board in Portsmouth in the morning and still be in France in time for an early lunch.
But while the short crossing time might draw comparisons with air travel, the experience is far removed – boarding is quick and hassle-free and by taking your own car you can pack as much as you like. Once on board, there's plenty of room to move around, as well as a bar, shop and cafés all of which offer a taste of France before you get there.
Crossings on the Normandie Express can be combined with sailings on any of Brittany Ferries cruise ferry services to France and Spain as well as their fast ferry service between Poole and Cherbourg. And those who are really tight for time can go out and back the same day, with excursion fares starting from just £20 per person.
