Winter refurbishments on the way
At Brittany Ferries we're proud of the high quality of our ships and each winter we take the opportunity to refit and refurbish our fleet to maintain these high standards. This year is no different, and a number of our ships are heading to dry dock so that we can carry out maintenance and refurbishment work as well as invest in improvements and new innovations.
Refits currently planned include:
- Normandie Express (Cherbourg, 24 October - 20 November)
- Armorique (Brest, 14 - 27 November)
- Mont St Michel (Gdansk, 5 - 31 January)
- Pont-Aven (Gdansk, 5 January - 1 February)
- Cap Finistère (1 - 14 February)
All maintenance and refurbishment work is overseen by Frédéric Pouget, who leads Brittany Ferries' in-house technical department based in Roscoff. The team work year-round with our hotel and commercial departments as well as each ship's crew to put together an annual maintenance and renovation plan for each ship, and to discuss ideas and wish-lists for on-board improvements and investments.
Whilst much of this work can be carried out while the ships are in service and at sea, some big jobs can only be done in a dry dock, such as the cleaning of each vessel's hull which maintains its fuel-efficiency as it glides through the water. Other big projects which can only be carried out during this period include overhauling the ships' main engines and electrical generators as well as refitting the galleys with the latest food cooking and storage equipment.
Not all the work is below decks or behind the scenes however, and passengers travelling in 2012 will notice fresh paintwork, new carpets and upholstery as well as the odd innovation and new facility, for example a new spa which is being installed on board Pont-Aven.
