Set at the junction of the rivers Odet and Steir, Quimper is Brittany’s oldest city and the capital of Cornouaille, an ancient duchy of the region. Certainly the most dominating feature here is the magnificent twin-spired Gothic Cathedral of St Corentin, the building of which began in 1239.

Things to do

Next door to the cathedral is the recently renovated Breton Museum, which for anyone interested in Brittany’s long and rich history is a must-visit place. Much of this history was influenced by the ancient Celts who came here from Cornwall to flee the Romans, and it is fascinating to see how our respective folklores intertwine.

On the other side of the road is the Musée des Beaux-Arts, where you’ll be able to view an outstanding collection of 19th and 20th century works, including some from the nearby Pont-Aven School of Art where Paul Gauguin painted.

With the River Odet meandering peacefully through its cobbled streets and flower festooned gardens, Quimper’s old town quarter is a delight. You’ll find excellent shopping, particularly on Rue Kéréon, and weekly markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Quimper is also justifiably famous for the fine and distinctive ceramics it has been producing since the late 17th century, and a museum dedicated to the history of this art is well worth a visit.
