Short Break Destinations in Brittany - St Malo

With Roscoff situated in the west, St Malo in the east is the second of Brittany Ferries' two arrival ports in Brittany.

Since ancient times a powerful tradition of seafaring and exploration has flourished in this city - Jacques Cartier set sail from here in 1534 when he discovered Canada, and during the 17th century the ancient walled citadel was a major stronghold for many of the era's most ferocious pirates. These days thankfully, although many reminders of this buccaneering past can still be seen, the only thing visiting strangers are now liable to be bombarded with is the Breton hospitality.

St Malo's Restoration

More than 80% of St Malo's ancient city was destroyed during world war two. However, unlike other old cities in Brittany who suffered a similar fate and elected to rebuild in modern style, St Malo's old quarter was painstakingly reconstructed stone by stone to create an almost exact replica of the original. Only an expert would be able to tell the difference, and a stroll through the tangle of narrow cobbled streets is sure to unearth a new delight around every corner.

Intra Muros

Tantalizing aromas drift from a wide variety of restaurants and cafes; craft shops will tempt you with an array of finely made merchandise; and you may even encounter a group of wandering street entertainers eager to show off their skills. Also, take a walk around the town's ramparts, especially where they overlook the long sandy beaches. You'll be rewarded with some terrific sea views.
