D Day landings in Normandy & the Battle of Normandy
D Day & the Battle of Normandy
June 6th 1944 saw one of the most heroic and epic seaborne invasions ever, as 130,000 men stormed the Normandy beaches. Such was the impact of that day, the 80-day Battle of Normandy that ensued and the sacrifice made by so many, that 65 years on thousands are still making their way to Normandy to learn more about what happened and to pay their respects to those that gave their lives for others.
Today you can sail with Brittany Ferries to either end of Normandy's landing beaches (in rather more style and comfort than those who made the trip in 1944). Ouistreham (Caen's port) or Cherbourg give you the perfect start to exploring the sites of this historic region, and whilst the weekend of 6 June will be busy, our year round sailings mean you can visit at any time to suit yourselves.
Places to visit
Dotted amongst the peaceful countryside and coastline of La Manche and Calvados are discreet museums, memorials, and cemeteries telling an uplifting story of heroism, sacrifice and ultimate triumph.
Every site is unique, every one worth a visit, but if you have only limited time to spend, here are a few remembrance sites that will provide a fascinating insight into Operation Overlord. Browse through our summaries of the main sites to visit:
