Possibly the best known and most fashionable of all these beach resorts is Deauville. With its five star hotels, marina, casinos, polo grounds, horse racing tracks, golf courses and fabled esplanade with private bathing huts, it is a magnet for France's rich and famous. Funfairs and kiss-me-quick hats are most definitely not the order of the day, and if you see a white van cruising slowly around, chances are that it won't be selling the anticipated ice cream, but most likely truffles, foie gras and caviar.

The Deauville Film Festival

Each year, in the first week of September, the International Centre here hosts a Festival of American Cinema. Previewing the best of America's new releases, the event attracts numerous top stars and directors. You might be pleasantly surprised to know that there is public admission to a large number of these previews, so making this festival the very antithesis of Cannes.
