Some years ago, Spain set up a calendar of national public holidays of interest to tourists. It is divided into two parts, first identifying nationally, even internationally popular and well-known festivals, as well as a list of regional tourist festivals.

The Encierro Ampuero event of one of them. Recognised worldwide thanks to the Pamplona festival in the Basque Country, the bull run is just as dangerous in Cantabria. The spectacle involves racing in front of or beside the bulls loose in the city centre and supervised by cabestros, with the bulls specially trained for this purpose. Thrilling as it undoubtedly is, the bull run remains no less dangerous. Those intending to take part in this exhilarating event are advised to be physically fit.
