The man who spoke vocalese…
After a rather timid beginning in the 70s, Al Jarreau suddenly exploded onto the music scene with his hit song "We're in this love together" from his highly-successful 1981 album Breakin' Away.
Jarreau is an eclectic musician, having won prestigious awards for both Jazz and R'n'B music. He took a great deal of inspiration from the famed trio of vocalists, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross whose achievement was to adapt instrumentals into vocals, mastering the style now known as "vocalese".
Yet it really is on the stage, as seen during his countless performances at the Montreux festival, that Al Jarreau truly distinguishes himself.

"Gone, and Returned"

From Saturday, March 22 2008 to Tuesday, September 30 2008
The Normandy-Quebec connection.
What does Normandy have in common with the history of Quebec?
Extensive waves of immigrants in the 17th century for one thing, but another connecting point exists, much closer to our time. The Second World War was an opportunity for these children of France to return to defend their motherland…
This is why the Juno Beach Centre is organising a temporary exhibition this year to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the foundation of Quebec. The thematic aim of the event is to shed light on the common history that Normandy and Quebec share - it is an homage to the soldiers of Normand origin among the troops who were there on D-Day, who fought the Battle of Normandy with Canadian forces.
The title is a fitting, poetic reference to the relation these soldiers had to the motherland - Partis, revenus...

Youssou N'Dour

Swing'in Deauville
Saturday, July 19 2008
Mbalax for all.
With his latest album, Rokku Mi Rokka, Senegalese musician Youssou N'Dour is still riding the musical wave that began 25 years ago with Nothing’s in Vain and Egypte (awarded a Grammy). N'Dour takes his inspiration from popular Senegalese tunes, in particular Mbalax which is a modern Afro-Caribbean cocktail of musical styles.
These two albums are considered the highpoint of his musical career. After a quarter of a century in the business, it can be said that N'Dour is truly a pioneer, being the first African musician to reach such wide and international recognition. An encouraging fact si that his shooting-star of a career paved the way for the new generations of West-African musicians.
With his new album, Youssou N'Dour gone even further in exploring the musical traditions of his homeland. "This album is inspried by Northern Senegalese music, the sounds of the desert near Mali and Mauritania. These desert folk will recognise these traditions and, like those of central Senegal, will be able to appreciate my music."

Gilberto Gil

Festival Swing'in Deauville
Thursday, July 17 2008
A radiant musician…
Gilberto Gil is one of the titans of the Brazilian music scene along with his close friend Caetano Veloso, whom he met during his exile in 1967 at the height of the Brazilian dictatorship.
Gil is the leading figure of the "Tropicalismo" movement, the Brazilian equivalent of the "Movida Madrilena" created by poet and polemicist Oswald de Andrade. These movements were the forerunners of modern anti-globalisation, proning resistance to this global community and a form of cultural creation based on creative "cannibalism" - taking from others to create one's own, unique culture.

From Friday, June 6 2008 to Wednesday, December 31 2008
A story to commemorate the fallen.
This expo will be telling a story. The story of the World Trade Center, of the attack on September 11th 2001, of the firemen and rescue workers and construction workers, of the police force and hospital workers, of the 2 700 people who lost their lives, and finally of the response that these events brought about…
These powerful themes are the subject of this exhibition comprised of personal objects, pictures, films, testimonies and remains found amidst a mountain of rubble. The tale of rescue operations will be told through various things… Things that we all use in everyday life, objects, fragments, debris, a crooked steering wheel, a souvenir…

Visit the Memorial of Général de Gaulle

From Monday, January 1 2007 to Sunday, November 30 2008
In honour of a great man.
It is in the splendid Renaissance "Logis du Gouverneur" (late 15th century), just 100 metres from the Sous-Prefecture that became the seat of the first authorities to assume control of a newly-liberated France in 1944, that a record is kept of the five key encounters between General de Gaulle and Bayeux.
Two of these encounters have left their mark on French history: 14 June 1944 and 16 June 1946. The five encounters are recalled in a collection of numerous archive documents, both printed and photographic, in film footage from the period and of objects that once belonged to the General.

It is to the Benedictine monks of the Middle Ages and the Classical period that Caen owes the majesty of its Town Hall, which occupies the former abbey of Saint-Etienne, known as the Abbaye-aux-Hommes. And, of course, to William the Conqueror who built the castle and, with his wife Matilda, founded the two abbeys that dominate the landscape.

Walk in the gardens of the Château de Brécy

From Sunday, March 23 2008 to Saturday, November 1 2008
Nature disciplined by reason.
Magnificent in itself, the Château de Brécy can also boast 17th century Italianate gardens magnificently laid out in terraces, culminating in ornamental wrought-iron gates by Isaac Geslin that seem to open onto empty sky.
Numerous sculptures and flower beds framed in embroidery-patterned box borders in the style of Claude Mollet make this a truly unique sight.

Discover the Tapestry of Bayeux
From Monday, January 1 2007 to Wednesday, December 31 2008
Bringing to life the epic history of William the Conqueror.
For almost 1,000 years, this seemingly endless woollen tapestry has carried down through the ages its images depicting the conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy.
Almost like an ancient precursor of the comic strip, it will transport you to the heart of this mediaeval epic, surrounded by Viking dragon-boats and Norman knights.

Visit the Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy, Bayeux

From Monday, October 1 2007 to Wednesday, December 31 2008
The Longest Day.
A short distance from the beaches of the Normandy Landings, the Battle of Normandy memorial museum in Bayeux, the first town to be liberated on the morning of 7 June 1944, presents a unique and exhaustive picture of the fighting that took place on Norman soil between 7 June and 29 August 1944.
The museum displays were updated in 2006 and now alternate a classic historical account with themed sections, a new 25-minute archive film and presentations of Second World War equipment and uniforms illustrating the historical account. The new presentation gives a better understanding of the enormous war effort made in the course of this battle to win back freedom in Europe.
