L ABBATIALE
Just off the Bénodet fishing harbour, this edifice is a five-floor hotel that dates back to 1880. Within, there are two types of rooms: the original 19th century rooms, all in blue tones, and the renovated rooms, more in red wine and bordeau hues.
The Abbatiale is also a restaurant with large French windows that command a breath-taking view of the Odet river and the Saint-Thomas chapel - they serve local specialties and seafood.
Some of their famed dishes include fried scallop-shell with a Saint-Marcellin emulsion, red mullet filet in cream of pistachio, and for dessert a dark chocolate nem with French sea salt… Delicious!

ESCAPADES
With its ideal location just off of Bénodet beach and a sweeping view of the ocean, this restaurant/caterer/gourmet grocer is a great place for some high-quality cuisine in which seafood is the protagonist.
The chef is a friendly, passionate food-lover who adds warmth to the classy, beach-town bistrot ambiance with its sophisticated Hemingway-style decor.
Try out the scampi ravioli marinated in its own stock with thyme and lemon, and afterwards indulge in a soft coco-chocolate and lemon cake, or the vanilla "mousseline" with caramel…
Heaven for those with a sweet-tooth!

CREPERIE SAINT-MARC

You will spot this crêperie from afar, located as it is right next to the Saint-Mathieu bell tower in the western section of the town.
Even if it isn't in the old town, it is worth going out of your way to visit the oldest existing restaurant of its kind in the area, dating back to the 19th century.
The mood inside is for seafaring folk, with a white wood-panelled interior with a touch of navy blue, and the establishment often exhibits local artists' works.
More importantly, the crêpes are of the finest quality, made in the purest age-old tradition - with a single bite, chef Mr Le Gall takes you on a culinary journey into the history of Brittany.
The Normandy crêpe with camambert, bacon and onions is as delectable as the smoked sausage crêpe with Molène seaweed… For dessert, enjoy a crêpe with vanilla flavoured "milk jam" (delux condensed milk), almond cream and butter.

CREPERIE AU VIEUX QUIMPER

This crêperie, located two minutes from the place Saint-Corentin, has been around since 1956.
Mrs. Cornec welcomes her customers into a warm, authentic interior, with old stone walls, Breton-style family portraits and paintings of various localities.
They serve traditional cuisine, with for example the "crêpe du patron": a Kraz-style (overcooked and crispy) buckwheat galette with sardines cooked in churned butter with a green salad on the side. Another specialty is the "Pavé quimpérois": galette with ham, egg, mushrooms and full cream.
Everyone seems to agree that the best dessert is the crêpe with caramelized apple and salty butter.

This restaurant is a two-minute walk from Quimper cathedral and welcomes customers in a cozy atmosphere comprised of two main rooms, one with an Asian-style interior, while the other is more colonial-inspired.
As the decor suggests, cuisine leans towards the multicultural, with a preference for Asian, Indian and French.
Within, you can degust some luscious steam-cooked wontons or nems, but also duck foie gras with gingerbread, and the Cow-boy meal (a barbecue set up at the table). For dessert, the infamous chocolate Kif (home-made soft chocolate cake) is a delight.

FAIENCERIE HB-HENRIOT

The Locmaria quarter had since the 15th century been a bastion for potters and various craftsmen, but when provincial ceramic artist Jean Baptiste Bousquet moved there in the 17th century to establish the first manufacturing plant, the town's history took an unprecedented turn.
Fine earthenware and the town of Quimper would thereafter become two indivisible concepts.
Every single item from this plant was designed and decorated by hand and boasts the artist's signature, since 1960.
Quimper's official seal now boasts the characteristic flower that symbolises the H.B. Henriot "faïence" or earthenware industries.
Today, the modern fine earthenware and crockery industries work towards a common goal: maintaining creative traditions while innovating.

FAIENCERIE D ART BRETON

It was in 1884 that Jules Henriot renamed the family business that he had recently taken over Faïencerie d'Art Breton (or Breton Art Earthenware factory).
This business was reborn in late 1994 - the great families that had produced earthenware for generations (Hanriot, Verlingue, Breton), with the help of the masterful potters from the Poterie de Montgolfier, worked together to revive a craft that had been in regional history for time immemorial.
Nowadays, the factory is run by Pierre Henriot, and every one of his products is hand-crafted and a one of a kind piece.
Decorations and motifs are entirely done by hand, and every item bears the "F.A.B." label on the underside.

BOUTIQUE FRANCOIS LE VILLEC

François Le Villec is mostly inspired by the traditions and legends of Brittany. It is this heritage which comes through in the interior design, with bright, sunny lines and exclusively Breton-style motifs, all in "glazik" blue and that particular Breton-jennet yellow - this style spills onto the tablecloths, linen and other decorative elements that are available at this boutique.
For lovers of quality embroidery and fine linen, this is the shop for you. The printed fabrics, designed by Le Villec himself, make stylish napkins, towels, ties and a myriad other things…
It is useful to know that this boutique has a website from which orders can be placed.

ARMOR LUX

Wallace Hubacher started the Armor Hosiery in 1938 - the brand was known as Armor lux.
He designed his first prêt-à-porter collections in 1970, an addition to his production of underwear and sailor's garb.
In 1993, two native Breton entrepreneurs, Jean-Guy Le Floch and Michel Gueguen, took over the company and create a line of children's clothes, Armor-Kids, in 1997.
A new factory was established in the Quimper area in 2004, and a year later Armor lux began a production of fair-trade cotton products, labelled by Max Mavelaar.
Today, the factory's boutique remains a favoured clothing shop among locals.

LA FORGE D ANTAN
This old, renovated forge, situated about 3km from the town of Bénodet and near the golf course, is definitely a place of character - its exposed beams, rough stone walls and old-fashioned fireplaces speak of a different era.
Service is friendly and the cuisine of high quality, with market-bought traditional products.
The menu varies depending on seasonal products and on the whims of chef Jean-Paul Bremond.
It will be hard to resist the Fouenant-style turbot and Plougastel strawberries on shortcake…

CHEZ JULES
This establishment opened its doors in 2008 in the heart of Bénodet. The interior is brand new, bright and airy, clean as a whistle and has a definite zen feel to it - the sound of running water from the indoor fountain is an invitation to meditation.
The decor is very modern: the tables with stainless steel crossbeams are a flashy backdrop for the colourful, original and spicy dishes. The chef is a lover of spices and has always prepared his meat and fish with the talent and creativity one would expect from a celebrity chef.
The codfish with risotto, coconut milk and a saffron emulsion has indeed seduced all those who ventured to taste it.

THE DONEGAN
The Donegan, opposite the Camaret-sur-Mer marina, the Vauban tower and the Rocamadour chapel, is an outstanding ambassador for those well-known Irish traditions of hospitality and friendliness.
The decoration is classic wood panelling, and the pub looks out onto the harbour; in summer, the terrace is a great place to sit and watch the world go by. The Donegan comes with all the charm of an authentic Irish pub: music, atmosphere and eight different beers on tap!

CREPERIE TY A DREUZ
The crêperie occupies one of the island's old stone houses, with something a little odd about it. Ty a dreuz in Breton means "leaning house", and the house does indeed bear a resemblance to the Leaning Tower of Pisa as the result of harmless subsidence.
In the finest tradition of Breton crêperies, the restaurant offers an impressive array of galettes and crêpes. The speciality of Ty a Dreuz is the Ouessantine, filled with smoked sausage and potato and only to be found here on the island. The nearby harbour and coastal walks all around the restaurant are ideal for a reinvigorating walk after your meal.

RESTAURANT PATRICK JEFFROY

This 1930s building on the Carantec peninsula and its panoramic sea views is both a visual and a gourmet delight. The best that land and sea has to offer is as refreshing to the spirit as the bracing sea air. Local ingredients and inventiveness are the two key assets put to very good use by chef Patrick Jeffroy. Pressé d'araignée à la concassée de blé tiède (pressed spider crab with warm crushed wheat), Saint-Jacques aux épices douces (mildly-spiced scallops) make a delightful surprise, and the view is never less than entrancing.

LE BISTRO DE LA TOUR

The Bistro de la Tour features two dining-rooms, each with its own distinct atmosphere. The ground floor bistro serves lunch and dinner in a wine-cellar setting. The large first-floor dining-room, on the other hand, features a permanent exhibition of paintings by Breton artists of the school of Pont Aven.
The food is a harmonious blend of fish and seafood with local produce, accompanied by a wine from our list of 850 references; the wine waiter will happily recommend the ideal wine to complement each dish.

RESTAURANT KER MOOR
Located a stone's throw from the beach, this restaurant is a haven for peace and quiet; sitting at a table one has a sweeping view of the beach and nearby park. A number of works by Belay, a painter of the Pont-Aven school, are displayed throughout the restaurant, frescoes which one could admire and discuss for hours on end.
The cuisine is evidently steeped in regional heritage, with a great deal of fish and seafood, but also traditional Breton "terroir" products.

LE TARA INN
The Tara Inn is a real Irish pub with a real Irishman for an inn-keeper, which no doubt explains the contagious good humour that reigns over the place. Everyone mingles here; the beer is excellent and pub food is available as you scan the drinks list.
All sorts of special events are held at the Inn: concerts of Celtic music or Gipsy swing, Breton dancing lessons, etc. The Tara Inn is a lively spot.

LE TOUR DU MONDE

Everyone, from children to sailors by way of grandmothers dropping in for their afternoon tea, is to be found at some time or another in this establishment, the only one in the whole of Brest to offer a view of the sea and the marina. The menu offers a choice of four variations on moules-frites (mussels with French fries) - marinières, in a cream sauce, with chilli pepper and curried – while the bar works like a pub, with drinks at the bar or at the large oak tables seating up to 10 around the huge fireplace!

LE TRANSAT

This 1960's building is perculiar, with its large white base shaped like a boat, streaked with red, and a terrace jutting out as if right into the sea. The interior decor revolves around a maritime theme; its old fashioned posters of ships and Normandy-style ship models, along with the mahogany furniture really does transport one into a sailor's world.
The cuisine is itself inspired by the maritime world as it has a large selection of fresh, quality fish, in particular one might try their excellent sole meunière or the scampi salad.

L AMBROISIE

This typically Breton restaurant serves a high-end cuisine that is made from quality local products - buckwheat recipes (galettes for example), small fish and scampi, scallops and various shellfish, crab, etc. A variety of fixed-price menus will delight your tastebuds and their extensive wine menu has 180 references, some of which are excellent vintage bottles. Interior decor is mostly based on contemporary paintings, some in the style of Francis Bacon, and tables are adorned by small, soft lamps that add to the intimate, cozy atmosphere.

LE COMIX

In the heart of the Quartier Saint-Martin, the liveliest quarter in Brest where all the students gather, the Comix is a theme bar named in honour of all those American comic-book superheroes and, of course, a famously indomitable Gaulish village holding out against the Roman invader. This welcoming bar doesn't serve magic potions, but it does offer a hundred or more comic-books for patrons to read, and a really friendly atmosphere at aperitif time.
So down with the Romans and their characterless bars, and off to the Comix!
