Visit the Marine Aquarium of Concarneau
From Thursday, January 1 2009

Museum and laboratory.

The Marinarium in Concarneau is a laboratory museum, exhibiting the work of researchers in the fields of marine life, the environment and marine resources.
The marinarium is housed in the world's oldest marine research station, built in 1859, which still features the original vivariums. The exhibition now on display recounts the scientific adventure of exploring the world of the sea: the first experiments in marine aquaculture, the identification of the many organisms that make up plankton, the discovery of potentially therapeutic compounds or new species of fish. The oceans cover two thirds of the total surface area of the Earth. Estimates suggest that the diversity of life forms in this ocean world is between 1,000 to 10,000 times greater than on land!

Visit Le Secq des Tournelles Museum
From Thursday, January 1 2009

Unrivalled in Europe.

Since 1921, the church of Saint-Laurent (15th and 16th century) has housed a collection of wrought ironwork that was and is a reference of its kind in Europe.
Its donor Henri Le Secq des Tournelles made over to the city of Rouen the first methodical collection of ironwork, begun in 1862 by his father Jean-Louis Le Secq Destournelles (1818-1882).

The latter, a member of the Mission Héliographique mounted by Prosper Mérimée to take photographs of outstanding monuments on behalf of the French Monuments Historiques department, was at once a practical, hands-on man, a painter and an art-lover. His was the original idea of taking an interest in hitherto overlooked objects: he began acquiring, from demolition sites as well as on the art market, every article of outstanding ironwork that he could find, with the exception of arms and armour, which others were already collecting.

Visit Carrouges Château
From Thursday, January 1 2009

Changing over the centuries.

Attractive in its austerity, the castle of Carrouges is a distillation of history from the 14th to the 20th century. Initially a fortress that came under siege by the Plantagenets, it was rebuilt during the Hundred Years War (keep), extended in the 15th century (Blosset wing), ornamented during the Renaissance (Cardinal Le Veneur's pavilion) and fortified yet again during the Wars of Religion (western bastion). In the 16th century, it became a magnificent residence (suite of spacious apartments) and was redesigned under the Enlightenment (music room).
The former canonry, founded by Louis XI, is now the headquarters for the Parc Naturel Régional Normandie-Maine.

This church was built to replace another 17th century place of worship where the Halles are now located. The neo-gothic Saint-Nicolas church in Pouliguen shelters a rich religious heritage. Inside, admire the 19th century stained glass windows and the works of contemporary artist Jean Fréour.

Saint-Hilaire church in Château-d'Olonne, visit
From Thursday, January 1 2009 to Friday, December 31 2010

The church that has replaced the castle.

The Saint-Hilaire church is said to have been built on the ruins of the Olonnes castle, which lent its name to the town, although no trace of this building remains.
In addition, no documents allow us to date the building of this church, which was considerably modified during the 18th century. The church was damaged during the French Revolution and was once again restored in the 19th century.

Le Mans, a rich history.

Located right in the heart of Le Mans, the Maine Museum of Archaeology and History brings you the history of this fascinating region from its origins to the late 15th century. The museum boasts a number of prestigious collections: Trésor des Sablons, the suaire de Saint-Bertrand, Plantagenêt enamel work and Coëffort silverware.

The architect designed the space in terms of vast, airy spaces; a minimalist design in which even functional, technical elements (lighting, cameras, ventilation) are hidden.

Saint-Herlé church in Douarnenez, visit
From Thursday, January 1 2009 to Friday, December 31 2010

A pretty Breton church.

The Saint-Herlé church was built from 1548.
The date was carved into the base of the church's steeple but is no longer visible. In the 19th century, work and modifications were carried out on the church. The spire was only finished during the 17th century. The timeframe during which the work was carried out explains the composite style of the building.

The Megaliths of the Quiberon Peninsula
From Thursday, January 1 2009 to Friday, December 31 2010

Vestiges that reach far back into history.

The most important Megalithic site on the peninsula is without a doubt the Kerbourgnec Alignments situated in Saint-Pierre-Quiberon. It is made up of a total of 25 sometimes oddly-shaped menhirs aligned in a sequence of five rows. Only a little further from this site, there is a "Cromlec'h" with a total of 27 menhirs placed in a circle - it is the third largest in the whole of Morbihan.

Walk in the gardens of the Textile Museum
From Thursday, January 1 2009

A unique collection of plants.

The positioning of the buildings, the rainwater pool in the centre and the view over the railway have shaped the composition of the park.

An alley links the reception terrace (a reminder of the squared gardens of the Middle Ages) to the main terrace (a vast open space at the foot of the former Blanchisserie buildings where the cloth was bleached), where the edges of the rainwater pool are cut to a gentle slope to accommodate the bleached cloth.

The surround is decorated with a series of floral scenes organised (over 1,080m²) by colour (red and pink, yellow and orange, green, blue). Masses of shrubs create patches of shade, especially where the "Sauvageau river" enters the museum. Contrary to certain ideas, the "simples" are grown at random (some of the plants concerned grow by the roadside or in the countryside).

Saint-Jacques church, Douarnenez, visit

The delight of Breton religious architecture.

The small Saint-Jacques church, whose oldest parts date back to the 14th century was elevated to the status of parish church in 1880, because of the increasing number of faithful. However, the town was only founded in 1919.
The Saint-Jacques church is particularly charming, with its irregular plan. It shelters a wealth of liturgical furniture and nice works of art such as the painted statues and the paintings on the vault (Listed as a Historic Monument).

This Anglo-medieval style manor house was built in 190 by a cloth industry industrialist from Cholet, Georges Turpault, who named it the "sea castle". It was then rechristened Turpault castle by the Quiberon inhabitants. It is a private property and cannot be visited.

Visit Kerazan Manor
From Thursday, January 1 2009

Authenticity intact.

The Domaine de Kerazan estate was bequeathed to the Institut de France in 1928 by Joseph Astor, the last of an eminent Breton family.
The estate consists of a manor house surrounded by 5 hectares of parkland and a vast expanse of farmland and forests. The land is farmed and maintained in accordance with the wishes of the testator, who stipulated that it should be inalienable.

The manor stands in the Finistère département, halfway between Pont-l'Abbé and Loctudy and some twenty kilometres south-west of Quimper, in Cornouaille, part of the "Bigouden country".
The heart of the estate is the manor house itself, its commons and its park, and the adjoining farm of Grand Kerazan: this was the "big farm", occupied by the "big farmer".
The most striking aspect of the estate is its authenticity: the buildings have remained intact, the manor house retains all its furnishings and collections, as if Joseph-Georges Astor had left it only yesterday.

An exemplary architecture.

The currentSaint-Gilles church replaces a previous building by Gilles de Retz in the 15th century.
On 22 January 1852, the town of Pornic decided to replace this church with a new building. Work began on it in 1864 and ended in 1875. The new Neo-Romanesque church has sober lines and rich decoration, particularly the sculpted door which represents the legend of saint Gilles, the patron saint of the church.

"A wondrous pyramid".

On the border between Brittany and Normandy, between Cancale and Granville, the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is a fascinating place. The Mount itself, perched on a rocky outcrop, forms a tiny village whose Grande Rue (the main and, indeed, the only street on the Mount) climbs up to meet the Benedictine abbey at its summit.

The bay, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979, is a land of history and legend, shaped over the millennia by the hidden forces of nature. It is here that you will find the highest tides in Europe.
Don't leave the village without tasting the delicious omelette de la Mère Poulard.
