Eure at the time of impressionism

Normandie impressionniste
From Tuesday, June 1 2010 to Sunday, October 31 2010
Eure at the time of impressionism
A member of Belgium's Royal Academy since 2008, Georges Rousse exhibits 250 photographs of the Eure to Vernon this summer. You may ask why? The act of picturing that he manages to reproduce with photography. Painter, sculpture and architect, Rousse seeks to discover every detail about this profession in order to capture this particular act of picturing. In Vernon, it is impressionism and creation of modern painting that are once more put to the fore. But this time, with the precise aim of finding a new image to the department. Acts of picturing are for example expected to take place with school children from Vernon. A way for Georges Rousse to pass on his art to an area he is particularly fond of.

- Silk and the Barrel: France and China 1700-1860 - exhibition

From Saturday, June 26 2010 to Sunday, November 7 2010
A taste for Chinese luxuries in France.
In the early 18th century, trading between France and China allowed France to discover Asian goods such as tea, silk, porcelain, pearl, ivory, etc. The first boat to provide this trade link was the Amphitrite which docked at the port of Nantes. From this first taste, France was to develop a craving for Chinese goods. China was to attract intrepid Westerners, however the sack of the Palace in Beijing in 1860 was to mark the end of an era.
This exhibition invites you to learn about the relations between France and China during this 1700 - 1860 period. Come and examine some of the precious objects from this period, loaned for the occasion by major museums such as the Musée Guimet in Paris.
This is a new and refreshing take on the age-old relationship between two countries.

- Weather Reports - exhibition

Normandie impressionniste
From Monday, June 7 2010 to Thursday, October 7 2010
Impressions of light.
Weather Reports illustrates an artistic desire to explore contemporary forms through sunlight: three artists Spencer Finch, Ann Veronica Janssens (as yet unconfirmed), and Martin Oppel will show us how. Here the colour of a beam of light or a cluster of balloons appears to take on the colour of the sky. The artists' sensitive search for objects revealed by sunlight - an idea which was so fashionable in the 19th century - does not necessary bring the impressionist movement to mind. On the contrary, certain artists who employ this method might not even be aware that it was the impressionists who first touched upon this idea.

- Léon Riesener, from Romanticim to Impressionism - exhibition

Normandie impressionniste
From Friday, June 4 2010 to Monday, November 8 2010
The forerunner of impressionism.
The exhibition is dedicated to Leon Riesener (1808 - 1878), and it is the Museums of Lisieux which together hold the most important public collection of his work in the world, consisting of paintings, graphic works and daguerreotypes. This exhibition will demonstrate how the stylistic evolution of this artist's work shows him to be an important precursor to the Impressionist movement.
Leon Riesener visited Normandy many times from a very young age, with his cousin Eugene Delacroix. In 1857, driven by the need for new impressions and some solitude, Riesener bought a mill in Benzeval, where he continued his research on colour and then on the division of tones. With his subjects and his style of painting, Riesener was to pique the interest of younger artists such as Berthe Morisot, Renoir and Degas. At his death, the Impressionists were to pay him a special tribute. Renoir engraved a portrait of the older artist on the front page of la Vie Moderne in the issue of 17 April 1879.

Normandie impressionniste
From Tuesday, June 1 2010 to Saturday, October 30 2010
Impressionist themes in video art.
Landscapes, intimate scenes, perception, the city ... These themes so dear to the impressionists are taken up by young artists who exhibit their work at the department civic building in Rouen. Their main aim? To express themselves differently from their predecessors while keeping this link to Impressionism. Their weapons? Light, colour, and ephemeral qualities. These 20 video artists from all over the world also aim to show that the artists of the 19th century were surprisingly modern.

Saint-Jean-d’Orbestier abbey in the Château-d'Olonne, visit

All year long
The many lives of a building.
The Saint-Jean d’Orbestier abbey is reputed to have been founded in 1107. In 1251 it was destroyed by fire, and was subsequently partially rebuilt. The Hundred Year War and religious wars left deep marks on it. Several times, the building was damaged and rebuilt.
After being abandoned, the Saint-Jean d’Orbestier abbey was appropriated by the town in 1989, and now welcomes exhibitions and cultural events.

Le Parc Naturel Régional Normandie-Maine is one of France's 44 regional national parks.

Visit the Cité de la Mer

All year long
The thrill of the deep.
La Cité de la Mer, which opened on 29 April 2002, is a vast scientific, cultural and fun centre devoted to the immense riches of the oceans and oceanographic exploration.
Exceeding all expectations, the Cité welcomed its millionth visitor in July 2005.!
Encouraged by these visitor numbers, the Cité de la Mer is now launching a second extension phase.
The origins of the Cité de la Mer, which enjoys an enviable situation in the former Cherbourg trans-Atlantic passenger docks, were twofold: to revive an Art Deco masterpiece, the former trans-Atlantic passenger terminal, and to make the nuclear submarine Le Redoutable the biggest submarine open to the public in the world. Those aims have been achieved.
The gradual descent into the abyss, during a three-hour journey into a fault in the ocean floor, is organised according to two major themes:
The Submarine, with an introduction to the Redoutable, the biggest submarine open to the public anywhere in the world.
For 45 minutes, the voice of the Captain explains how a nuclear submarine works and what life onboard is like for its crew.
The Ocean, which concentrates on exploring and using the rich resources of the ocean, and which centres around one of the deepest aquariums in Europe (10.70m) containing over 3,500 fish.

Tour of the Dance Museum, Rennes

All year long
An ode to the world of dance…
"My plan is to create a wholly new kind of national choreography centre. The idea is to take the materials, principles and hard work that are inherent in dance culture, to put them in a box and shake the whole thing up. The context or framework of this centre will be fun and somewhat archaic, a dusty place that commands respect, a "museum" unlike any other.
(…)This museum aims to be an introduction, an apéritif to the main course of dance history and culture. The museum will not be exclusively dedicated to choreographic arts; the objective is not to create a list or canon of dance practises throughout the world. Rather, it is meant as an appetizer, to stimulate curiosity and interest."
Boris Charmatz, extract from the "Manifesto for a National Choreographic Centre", 2008.

Morgat Port

All year long
A commune tied to the sea.
Since as early as the Antiquity, the commune of Morgat has been turned to the sea. At first a mere sardine fishing port, Morgat became a favoured holiday destination in the 19th century, drawing bourgeois city-folk to the coast in search of peace and quiet. The city developed a great deal during this period and numerous bourgeois villas were raised there; the port was slowly transformed into a marina for sea-faring tourists.
Today still the port de Morgat welcomes leisure sailing enthusiasts and tourists by the busload. The fishing harbour has nevertheless maintained its authentic, traditional air and is a great place to get into fishing.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame in Rouen, visit

All year long
The cathedral of the famous.
Located in the heart of the right bank, the high silhouette of Rouen’s Notre-Dame cathedral dominates the city. Construction of the Gothic cathedral was undertaken in the middle of the 12th century, replacing the Roman cathedral (the crypt being preserved). A hundred years later, the cathedral had been completed but it was modified and enhanced over the course of the following centuries.
Cathédrale Notre-Dame houses, in the ambulatory and Chapelle de la Vierge, some famous tombs (recumbent statues of Rollon, the first duke of Normandy and Richard the Lionheart).

Saint-Hilaire church in Château-d'Olonne, visit

All year long
The church that has replaced the castle.
The Saint-Hilaire church is said to have been built on the ruins of the Olonnes castle, which lent its name to the town, although no trace of this building remains.
In addition, no documents allow us to date the building of this church, which was considerably modified during the 18th century. The church was damaged during the French Revolution and was once again restored in the 19th century.

Kid Station, Saint-Jean-de-Monts

All year long
Where kids are treated like royalty!
Parents and children all want their holidays together to be a success and a source of unforgettable happy memories.
A family holiday resort must be in a position to offer absolutely everything to make that possible: suitable accommodation for families, activities to suit different ages, fun and entertainment for all, and a wide range of facilities in an environment that must be not only attractive (naturally!) but also safe.
Station Kid resorts, in association with the Ministry for Tourism which supports the association's projects, are committed to this vision, and have agreed to a strict charter with six key checkpoints : welcome, facilities, events and entertainment, activities, environment and safety.
Communes which qualify receive the award for a period of three years. The award is made only to communes that pursue a real policy of welcoming children aged between 3 and 12 and their families.
As a result, everything is in place to ensure that children have a fantastic time with their parents, who can feel relaxed and secure.
On the programme: sports, walks, fun learning activities, games and competitions and shows for all the family to enjoy.
