Electric cycle hire in St Malo

What better way to explore St Malo and its beautiful coastline than on a fun and easy to ride electric bicycle that takes all the effort out of cycling. Brittany Ferries have teamed up with Locvelec to offer you this exciting new way to travel and what's more you will get a 10% reduction on hire prices on presentation of your Brittany Ferries travel document.

When collecting your bike you will also be given suggested itineraries starting from and returning to the Locvelec hire shop.

Here is an example of a 25k circular ride taking you around the 'Malouinières de Rothéneuf'. Malouinières are elegant, privately owned, classic style houses, built between 1650 and 1730 within a radius of 12 to 15 km from St Malo, that were the summer homes of the many wealthy ship-owners of the time who dominated St Malo from the time of Louis XIV and who rented ships to the corsairs - or licensed 'pirates' who were permitted by the king to capture English ships and split the spoils three ways between themselves, the ship owners and, of course, the king. They moved out of the city in the summer because of poor hygiene but moved back to their town-houses for the winter. Proximity to the old walled town still gave these people the protection they required in case of an impromptu attack by the English.

On this tour you will also see 'Les Rochers Sculptés' - Abbot Fouré 1839-1910, suffered a stroke and became deaf and dumb at 55. He retired to Rothéneuf and carved 'the life of Rothéneuf' with its legendary and bloody pirates. 300 sculptures trace their lives of debauchery and their alliances with demons.

Other favourite itineraries include a trip to Cancale along the coast and visits to Dinard, Saint Suliac, Solidor etc.

Technical information

• To start the bike you will need to cycle but once this is done you can climb hills without too much exertion. You then decide how much or little you wish to exercise.
• Depending on how much personal effort you wish to put in the bikes can do 40 to 60km on one charge
• Each bike has an odometer so that you know exactly how far you can go
• Tyres will not puncture
• These bikes are allowed on cycle paths
• Helmets aren't compulsory although they are supplied free of charge if requested
• No insurance or driving licence is required
• Each bike is supplied with two high security locks
• Child seats, trailers, bags are also available for hire
• A deposit is required in form of a cheque or if you prefer you can leave your passport as security
• These bikes are very environmentally friendly

Opening hours

1 April to 31 October from Wednesday to Saturday 10.00 to 12.30 and 14.00 to 18.30 and Sunday from 09.30 to 12.00 and 14.00 to 18.30. Open every day in July and August. Pre-reservation is advisable.

How to get there

A taxi from Intra Muros will cost between €7 and €9. On foot for directions visit locvelec website - it is about 2km from Intro Muros.
