Surfing Beaches in Cantabria
One of world surfing's best kept secrets. A golden nugget that should be experienced. Cantabria has it all, long barrels to glassy peaks everywhere.
Whatever the time of year, whatever the conditions, you should be able to find exactly what you are looking for. Whether it is beach break, reef break or something a bit rockier Cantabria has it, and with two sailings a week into this part of 'Green Spain' the Brittany Ferries service to Santander could not be more convenient.
Recommended beachs in Cantabria
Just outside Suances, this popular beach break works in all conditions. Less crowded early in the morning, potentially worth avoiding in the peak summer season. Works well on a mid to high tide with both rights and lefts, although at low tide you should watch out for the rocks.
A very consistent beach break that produces some excellent quality waves with hollow tubes and long waves. This break is not necessarily for the beginner and is heavily localised. Also, gives a strange appearance on arrival that waves are smaller than they actually are, so get a close up view.
Playa de Somo
A great place to watch the Pont Aven arrive and depart, Playa de Somo is a protected beach within the bay of Santander and is well worth a visit when other locations are too big or blown out. Because of its locality with Santander, it can get busy, but is suitable for all levels of surfer.
A classic of the Cantabria region, loved by locals and visitors alike. A powerful beach break and arguably one of the best waves in the area surrounding Santander. With great rights and lefts this area is highly accessible to all surfers and therefore can get quite crowded during the summer months. Try June and September for quieter line ups.
