Description of Hotel de l'Océan, Concarneau

As well as being France's third most important fishing port, Concarneau is a very popular holiday resort well known for its charming 'ville close', a fortified town that stands on a rocky island in the harbour, reached by a little stone bridge. Although small in size, it is one of Brittany's most visited sites so can get busy in the height of the summer, but with its picturesque paved streets lined with shops and restaurants, and old granitehouses it's very attractive and well worth a visit. There is also the Musée de la Pêche where you can learn all about the fishing industry and even climb aboard an old trawler, after which you can walk round the ramparts and take in the lovely views across the bay. Elsewhere in town there is a good indoor food market, a Marinarium (marine biology centre), the lovely Château de Keriolet and, in summer, boat trips to the beautiful Iles de Glénan. Furthermore, if you are feeling energetic after strolling along thepromenade beside the corniche, there are several scenic footpaths that start locally including the coastal path to Sables Blancs beach from Quai de la Croix and another one that is family friendly and runs through Kérandon wood. And if you are lucky enough to be here in mid August, don't miss the Blue Nets festival (Filets Bleus) a traditional Breton celebration of the town's fishing industry. The Hotel de l'Océan is in a great location opposite the beach and just 15 minutes from the old town. It has good facilities including billiards, a sauna and an inviting terrace alongside the heated covered pool where the sides and roof can be removed in warmer weather. Bedrooms are comfortable and there is a very good restaurant with panoramic views over the bay so all in all it's a great place to stay.

Restaurant closed 20 Dec-15 Feb & Sat/Sun (1 Oct-15 Apr).

Customer Reviews

Hotel de l"Ocean is situated immediately opposite a broad sandy beach and is within an easy level walk, via the coastal road/esplanade, of Concarneau's old town and centre. We were made very welcome in the hotel, our room looked over the beach and had a newly fitted en-suite. Recommended.

My wife and I stayed here for a short break. The hotel staff were excellent. Friendly helpful and professional. The room was everything you would expect and spotlessly clean. We dined in the hotel restaurant two of the evenings that we were there and both meals were absolutely superb. The location of the holiday was well suited to nice walks along the sea front into centre. We would both like to return.

Good location near the town. Lovely views across the bay with excellent sandy beaches. Lovely walk into town by the sea or along the coastal path in the other direction.

The Hotel de l'Ocean in Concarneau, Brittany is an excellent place to stay. The location is ideal for wandering around Concarneau itself, being only a short walk along the sea-front. The cleanliness is excellent, the staff are friendly and efficient, and the rooms are lovely. I highly recommend this hotel.
