Description of Hotel de l'Univers, St Malo

On a lively square overlooking the Hotel de Ville (town hall), the Hotel de l'Univers is approximately 1k from the ferry terminal and is a favourite with our passengers. The attractions of Intra Muros are on your doorstep as this pleasant hotel is in an excellent location on a square within the old city walls. Full of charm, the bedrooms are furnished in tones of red and brown and the cosy bar which has a good old British nautical feel and an extended terrace is one of the best in town so we're told! It has a restaurant too, although this is 100m away. With its long maritime tradition and historic attractions, St Malo is one of France's great tourist centres and is ideal for a break at any time of the year. The town is split into 3 main parts - Paramé, St Servan and, without doubt the most popular, Intra Muros (within the walls) where strolling through the maze of cobbled streets with their tall granite buildings, lively bars, restaurants, and stylish boutiques feels like stepping back in time. You can take a bracing walk around the ancient ramparts admiring the fabulous views or take a ride on the little road train and discover places you might have otherwise missed. For a day at the seaside you need venture no further as the local beaches are superb and opposite the old town there are 2 or 3 little offshore islands and forts that can be reached on foot at low tide, one of which is Grand Bé where the writer Chateaubriand is buried. Even if the weather is less than perfect at times there are still plenty of things to see and do including the grand aquarium, the thalassotherapy centre (spa treatments), the casino, the fabulous Memorial 39-45 museum, the Fort National, Le Monde du Coquillage (a great little shell museum and shop) - the list is endless. One thing is for sure though, once you've visited St Malo it's almost certain that you'll return.

Customer Reviews

Mr Steffen Tauchnitz

Hotel L'Univers is a well established, traditional accommodation. Just a short walk off the ferry port it is ideal if one travels on foot. Reception staff are friendly, helpful and my request for a room with view onto Place Chateaubriand was not a problem. Very friendly email contact. The breakfast was great - nicely presented and as a regular customer I do appreciate the fact that staff are actually staying there for many years. I should not advertise the hotel too much, there might not be a room available if I go next time. But thank you very much for such a nice natural approach to French hospitality - merci beaucoup

This was an extremely well located, clean, lively hotel. The rooms were modern and clean, as was the bathroom. No parking is available but there are plenty of car parks outside the city wall (short walk from the hotel) at a modest cost. We paid 4 euros for the day, between 12 and 2 and overnight is free. The bar is the best in town with plenty of seating, attentive staff and lots of heaters (we visited in November). Would visit again and would thoroughly recommend.

Hotel de l'Univers is situated within the ramparts of the old city, very close to information centre and lovely cobbled walkways with interesting shops and galleries. Very good eating opportunities close by. Excellent choice would thoroughly recommend.

The hotel was easy to find in a central but quiet location with plenty of good restaurants there also. Check-in at reception was efficient and receptionist welcoming. The room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was well laid out with everything easy to find. It was good to be able to spend about ten minutes practicing my French language with easy to read newspapers on a shelf in the breakfast room. Overall, it was peaceful and homely. Checkout was efficient. Overall very pleasant stay. Good value for money also. Thank you.

I stayed at the Hotel L'Univers for a few days in August 2017 with my family. Our family room was excellent. It was comfortable and clean. Towels were changed daily and the room cleaned. The hotel staff were friendly and very helpful. We would definitely stay here again. It was a very short walk to town and restaurants and under 30 minute walk to the port.

Nice comfortable hotel right in the centre, if you have luggage and turn up early it's fine to leave luggage in the room next to reception and have access to it up to check in time, also the same applies if you have an evening ferry as we did, just leave your luggage and enjoy the day. Good continental breakfast is self service and good quality. Would def go back.
