Great little hotel, quirky bar (and probably cheapest in St Malo for beverages). It's only about 1km from the ferry terminal, which took about 10 minutes to walk to - seriously don't bother with taxi. Breakfast was good; usual French/continental breakfast but happy with it - if you're English, bring your own tea bags though! Only very small negative, there was no tea/coffee making facilities in room. Would definitely stay again Mr & Mrs Winch, November 2012

The hotel is in the hubub of a lovely French square, really friendly, brilliant with children, continental breakfast very good. Close to a really nice eatery called Le Cafe de l'Ouest - lovely food and really good service. The Guenigault, October 2012

The Univers is in the centre of St Malo with a great bar to watch the world go by. The staff in the hotel were unobtrusive but there to help if required. The bar seems to be extremely popular with the French and we found it a great place to relax for a few days. Our room did not have air conditioning and this could be a problem in the heat of summer, it did not bother us because we went in the autumn! We would go back to this hotel due to it's eccentricity which made us feel at home! The hotel was a reasonable price in a great location. The Watsons, September 2012

L'Univers is a traditional hotel ideally placed right opposite the castle in the Old Town (Intra Muros). It has a fascinating bar and is surrounded by a variety of good restaurants. Mrs Paget, April 2013

Good value for money, a cosy bar, convenient place to stay, right next to the sea as well! IThe first impressions of the swirly floral red carpet doesn't bode well as you enter but there are some lovely old features that haven't been disguised here. I wish the hotel would carry on the original Art Nouveau decor, I loved it! Unfortunately they are doing up the rooms in a 70's style, I bet it was gorgeous once, I sneaked a look at a ballroom which had never been changed with parquet floors and old mirrors and coat stands etc. As much as you want to eat breakfast including boiled eggs, cheese and ham, orange juice, croissants and much more! We stayed at the Hotel Univers in St Malo, it was a 60th birthday present. Everything about the hotel was perfect and the staff couldnt have been more helpful. I even attended a yoga class which made my holiday. Would recommend and we will return. Mr & Mrs Skajarowski, February 2013
