Description of Hostellerie la Croix Blanche, Fontevraud l'Abbaye

At first appearance, Fontevraud appears to be nothing more than a modest village with a few signs pointing you to a door in a high wall. But through that door you find a vast ancient abbey rich in history that was founded by an 11th century preacher to cater for his following. Louis XIV's daughters were educated there and the list of abbesses reads like a 'Who's Who' of French nobility. The lovely Croix Blanche is just opposite the Abbey and w as originally a coaching inn dating back to the 16th century. Inside, its authentic features offset beautifully against modern comforts to create stylish accommodation whilst outside you can relax by the pool or on the lovely flower bedecked terrace. You have the choice of a renowned gourmet restaurant or, a French style bistro and after all that if you fancy some exercise or discovering your surroundings by bicycle, you can hire one from reception. This area is very good for walking too and for those who like wine, there is also a vineyard within easy reach where you can taste before you buy.
