Hotels in Western Loire

For centuries Western Loire was one of the country's most highly favoured holiday regions with the kings and noblemen of France. So much so that, captivated by the sheer splendour of the countryside and pleasing warm climate, many chose to build magnificent chateaux of their own right here close to the banks of France's longest river.

Most of these are now open to the public, and quite apart from providing a visually stunning insight into how the French aristocracy indulged itself, a great number also have a fascinating history of battles, political intrigue, scandal and murder. The telling of this history is frequently accompanied by a spectacular sound and light show.

Of course, Western Loire has many other attractions in addition to its renowned chateaux, from fine cities offering a wealth of sights, shopping and entertainment, to the numerous stylish resorts, peaceful islands and sandy beaches scattered along its 300 kilometres of Atlantic coastline. Naturally freshly caught seafood is always plentiful, while facilities for a huge variety of sports and activities, both land and water based, are superb.
