Oviedo is the capital of Asturias. Set more or less in the geographical centre of the region amongst the lush greenery and gentler foothills of the mountains, this beautiful university town has a history that dates back to 761AD. The cathedral here is considered to be a prime example of late Hispanic Gothic architecture, and the 9th century Holy Chamber that it incorporates contains many priceless jewels and artifacts of around the same period.

But don't run away with the idea that Oviedo is all about historical buildings. Certainly there are many here of enormous interest, but there is also a modern and extremely lively face to the town.  You'll find cafes, restaurants and bars all over the place, and as you would expect of somewhere with a major university, there's enough nightlife to exhaust even the most determined of pleasure seekers.

A warm welcome awaits

Adding to this, the locals are genuinely friendly, so when you're out and about a few words of Spanish can pay big dividends. Many people go to bars and restaurants to dance, and there are few that don't offer some kind of entertainment. Sidrerias are always popular. These are restaurants where the renowned local cider is served along with specialist regional cuisine, much of which centres on seafood. And of course, expect your cider to be poured for you in the traditional manner - from way above head height into a glass held at around waist level.

Things to do

In the heart of the city is Campo de San Francisco, a magnificent 60,000 square metre public park ideal for a relaxing stroll or perhaps a picnic. And if you want to capture the very essence and spirit of Oviedo, do try to visit the popular and colourful local market, El Fontan. Even if you don't actually buy anything, the experience of just being there and soaking up the atmosphere is time well spent.

Little more than a ten-minute bus ride away from the city is Mount Naranco. On the slopes here you'll find two beautifully preserved 9th century churches - also a highly impressive mountain amphitheatre where a large number of festivities, shows and sporting contests are still held, particularly during September.
