Places of interest in Asturias
and Cantabria

Image depicting Cudillero, West of Gijon

Cantabria and Asturias are both largely regions of unspoiled wide-open spaces, so apart from the cities of Santander and Gijon, places of interest tend to centre more on a wealth of fascinating smaller towns, villages and sites of historical significance. These were the only two regions of Spain that the Moorish invading hordes of the Middle-Ages failed to completely conquer and occupy. In fact it was here amongst the Picos de Europa mountains that a Christian army routed the Moors in a major battle during the 8th century. Consequently, age-old cultures and traditions that have died out elsewhere in the country are still very much preserved here, and many people regard these two provinces as being the real birthplace of Spain.
