Paradores in Spain
Paradores are a chain of government-backed hotels created to offer visitors luxury surroundings and a unique ambiance. Some are purpose-built, but many others are former castles, manor houses, monasteries and palaces with a rich and fascinating history attached to them.
All of these will have been meticulously restored to preserve their previous elegance, while at the same time subtly incorporating a wide range of more modern aspects to ensure your absolute comfort.
About Catalunya
Barcelona is the capital of this region and the 2nd largest city in Spain. The Costa Brava to the north of Barcelona is a rugged, pretty coastline of lovely sandy coves and rocky cliffs bordering the Mediterranean sea, whilst inland the countryside is still wild and beautifully unspoilt.
For fantastic scenery drive up and over the Pyrenees mountains into France – even in the spring you could leave Spain bathed in sunshine and arrive at the top to find deep snow so go prepared!
About La Rioja
This region is where many of Spain's finest wines are produced. The food, too, in this area enjoys a high reputation, with one of the specialities being 'patatas a la Riojana', a spicy potato dish with chorizo sausage and dried peppers.
As with many parts of the world where viticulture is taken seriously, the density of the vineyards makes the scenery a little monotonous with undulating hills covered with miles of tidy rows of grape vines.
About Pais Vasco
This region in northern Spain is perfect for hiking, riding, golf and mountain sports. You will find many areas of nature that are almost untouched, especially the natural parks of Valderejo, Urkiola, Urdaibai and the magical landscapes along the Guernica river.
