High on a hill in the heart of the Cherbourg Peninsular, the lovely medieval town of Coutances can be seen from miles away. Steep narrow streets wind their way to the summit and the beautifully impressive Gothic cathedral and down below the fountained public gardens are illuminated at night during the summer. Coutances is also known for its cheese - very rich and high in calories but totally delicious. The Cositel, a modern hotel surrounded by greenery at the entrance of town, has comfortable bedrooms, a view of the cathedral, a pleasant terrace surrounded by aquatic gardens, and a choice of dining - an all-you-can-eat buffet in the bistro or somewhat more refined cuisine in the restaurant.
