The garden borders a canal in the Marais Poitevin (rowing boat available). Previous guests loved using the boat, fishing in the canal, and observing wildlife. Further afield, guests have enjoyed visits to Cognac and La Rochelle.

We have enjoyed 3 bbqs this week and sampled some very nice wines. Vouvant is a pretty village.

It is worth a trip south towards Cognac, to buy some excellent brandy and pineau from one of the many small distilleries that are signposted from the main roads.

We can thoroughly recommend the bird sanctuary 'Les Oiseaux du Marais Poitevin' at Saint Hilaire la Palud & 'Chateau de Terre Neuve' at Fontenay le Comte. The cockerels & chickens make a regular appearance in the garden, plus a couple of cats.

Don't forget to go to the restaurant 'La Grange aux Roseaux' in Maillezais where you can taste all the local specialities such as eels or local white beans and the local white wines.

Regular visitors were three ducks - two males, one female. One of the drakes the dominant; they all enjoyed stale bread!

We enjoyed the coastal resorts from Les Sables d'Olonne to the Ile de Noirmoutier, having daily picnics looking at blue sea and sky and golden sand.
