Simple gite next to outbuildings, in village near friendly owner's house. Small kitchen (m/wave). Living room. Shower (w/machine). Wc. Two 1st floor bedrms - 1 dble, 1 with 2 small dble beds. 2nd wc. Travel cot. High chair (on request). Courtyard & grounds with furniture, bbq & swing. Cleaning charge is per hour.

Rochefort was the greatest shipyard in France producing large numbers of sailing vessels each year. Visit the Corderie Royale (ropeworks) which has been beautifully restored & houses an exhibition on ropemaking. Beaches at Châtelaillon & Fouras (15k) are recommended.

There is a hoopoe living in the village. He (she) can been seen in the mornings sitting on the TV aerials.

Take the little electric water taxis at La Rochelle - saves the feet a little & takes you between the two towers into the harbour.

If you like oysters & mussels you'll be in heaven, they're everywhere in this area and so cheap compared with home.

For beaches, visit Chatelaillon Plage & Isle d'Oléron which is pretty isle with lots of little fish restaurants.

Coulon in the Marais Poitevin (Venice-verte) well worth a visit for a guided punt ride. Like the Louisiana swamps without the crocodiles! Also recommend Phare de la Coudre if you're brave enough
