This relaxing island has all the ingredients for a perfect holiday. Only 5k wide and 28k long, it has a host of appealing beaches, the best of which are found on the south coast of the island. The very pretty harbour of the tiny capital, St Martin, is lined with shops and restaurants, and here you can find entertainment and boat and bicycle hire as well as a small beach. The island is reached by a magnificent bridge (toll about 17 euros return in summer for car and passengers) - an experience in itself.

100m from the wide blue waters of the ocean, these 65 apartments with outdoor pool (14m x 14m, open June-end Sept), are in La Couarde, one of the island's major resorts. The cool pine woods of the forest of Henri VI are a couple of kilometres along the road, backing yet more lovely golden beaches. Bbqs are not permitted in summer months.
