Region overview
The fabulous sights and scenery of the Dordogne, the internationally famous and sophisticated beach resort of Biarritz, classic and incomparable Bordeaux wines. These are just three of the reasons why Aquitaine holds such an irresistible appeal for holidaymakers of all ages.
But there are also many other attractions in Aquitaine you should not miss. The prehistoric caves at Lascaux for instance, which feature drawings of wolves, mammoths and other creatures of years ago. Then there are the beach resorts of Lacanau, Arcachon and Hossegor, and in the department of Landes, Europe's largest pine forest. Within this million hectares of greenery you'll discover charming little towns and villages ready to extend a friendly welcome to visitors, especially during the second half of July when the carnival season is in full swing. Finally, the city of Bordeaux is not all châteaux tours and fine dining, it also has a particularly vibrant nightlife to offer lively minded visitors.
