Ferry vs Plane

Planning a family trip to Western France?

We've compared two travelling options for a family to see how easily and comfortably they can reach their holiday destination in the Loire Valley.

The family

Rose, Dad, Mum, Tommy

By Plane

Fly to Nantes: Flying to Nantes, the family will collect a hire car to drive to the Loire Valley.

The luggage: One hand luggage bag and one 23kg hold bag per person. Pay extra for golf clubs. Pay extra for airport parking.

The flight: Transfer from car park with luggage, check-in, pass through security, await boarding, select your seat. Approx. check-in 2 hours.

In-flight: In-flight snacks and drinks available, limited leg room, definitely no fresh air!

Hire a car: Before you get on the open road, you'll need to collect and pay for your car rental. Pay extra for a car seat.

Add on your accommodation: You could book self-catering accommodation in the Loire Valley but this won't be included with the cost of your flights.

By Ferry

Sail to Caen: Cruising from Portsmouth with Brittany Ferries the family will arrive in Caen and drive comfortably in their own car to the Loire Valley.

The luggage: As much as you can fit in your car! No baggage restrictions. Even take your dog.

The ferry crossing: From the port, simply drive aboard and cruise in comfort. Check-in time 45 mins. Bureau de change, cinemas, ensuite cabins, restaurants, shops, arcades, cafes, play area.

On-board: Enjoy traditional French cuisine, make the most of the free Wi-Fi and perhaps get some rest in an air-conditioned cabin.

Drive on, drive off!: Enjoy the drive in the familiarity and comfort of your own car.

Include your accommodation: Opt for a ferry inclusive holiday deal and include your cottage with your ferry costs. Cottage is part of your ferry inclusive holiday deal.
