Hostellerie la Croix Blanche, Fontevraud l'Abbaye
France > Atlantic Loire Valley > FONTEVRAUD L'ABBAYE
The market town of Fontevraud is set around a vast ancient abbey rich in history and culture. Home to the splendid effigies of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart, it also has an exquisite modern art museum where masterpieces include Renoir and Gauguin and delicate sculptures and artefacts from around the world are on display. The lovely Croix Blanche is just opposite the Abbey and was originally a coaching inn dating back to the 16th century. Inside, its authentic features offset beautifully against modern comforts to create stylish accommodation whilst outside you can relax by the heated pool (Apr-Oct) or on the lovely flower-bedecked terrace. The hotel also has an excellent restaurant. Exquisite towns, the river Loire, vineyards and fabulous chateaux are within easy reach whether you wish to travel on foot or by car. Or why not discover the tranquil surroundings and the National Park by bicycle (for hire from reception). Superior rooms, which are more spacious and have tea and coffee making facilities, are also available (supplement payable).
