Hotel Las Rocas, Castro Urdiales
Spain > Cantabria > CASTRO URDIALES
Castro Urdiales is one of Cantabria's prettiest fishing ports and coastal resorts so it is not really surprising that many Spaniards own second homes here. The town is dominated by its Gothic church - well worth a visit if it's open - and a lighthouse built within the ruins of a castle plus it also has a lovely old quarter where the arcaded streets are lined with tall, glass fronted houses. There is a fabulous beach and the port is a great place for a stroll before lunch or dinner - people come from far and wide to sample the excellent waterfront restaurants where freshly caught sardines and anchovies are the local speciality and feature on most menus. Castro also has an interesting mining past and as a result its old railway lines have been converted into an excellent network of cycling and walking paths that start from the town centre and reach out into the surrounding countryside. And where better to stay to enjoy all this than the Las Rocas. In a good location not far from the beach and town it has a warm ambience and friendly staff, and the comfortable bedrooms alll have complimentary soft drinks and tea and coffee making facilities. Some also have a sea view. The restaurant specialises in fresh fish whilst snacks and tapas are available in the bar, and each morning guests may indulge in a generous buffet breakfast - all in all a great location and hotel.
