Description

Founded by the Romans in 23BC Mérida is one of the most historic cities in Spain, and has many monuments, sculptures and Roman remains, including the theatre, circus and amphitheatre. The Parador is a former convent in a quiet square near the town centre and has its own collection of antiquities in the 'Jardin de Antigüedades' as well as more modern facilities including air conditioned accommodation, a gym, sauna and outdoor pool (mid June-Sept ). Cuisine highlights are gazpachos (cold soup), robust stews and the famous Almoharín figs.
