FERRY & HOTEL
Hotel Juan de la Cosa, Santoña
Spain > Cantabria > SANTONA
A real gem of a hotel, you can expect a warm welcome at the friendly family-run Juan de la Cosa. 2k from Santona, it's in a fabulous location alongside one of the region's most beautiful beaches that is particularly popular with windsurfers although its never crowded whatever time of year you may choose to visit. Comfortable bedrooms are spacious and well equipped - Brittany Ferries' clients are accommodated in rooms with a sea view except in high season when a 15€/nt supplement applies ( Easter & mid Jul-end Aug), and there is a cafeteria as well as a very good restaurant. Facilities include an indoor pool and jacuzzi plus a sauna (charge payable) and a large garage - parking approx. 12€/night. With the beach on one side and vast wetlands and mountains on the other this is a paradise for walkers and nature lovers. The wetlands are home to over 100 species of birds and have been granted national reserve status - call in at the visitors centre in the harbour for information and places to best visit. There is a regular bus service into Santona, a pleasant town and fishing port where narrow streets lead up to the top of the hill and the medieval Fuente de San Martin fort from where you can get great views out towards Laredo on the opposite side of the bay. The sunsets are pretty fabulous too. There's also a pretty promenade and plenty of little bars and cafes where you can try the tempting tapas, many of which feature locally caught fish and seafood as well as the famous anchovies for which Santona is well known. The anchovey companies usually have organised tours where you can learn all about the canning process and taste the end product. Midway between Santander and Bilbao both are easily reached from here and make a great day out too.
Restaurant & cafeteria only open Sat/Sun in November.
