Ibis Bayeux Port en Bessin, Port en Bessin
France > Normandy > PORT EN BESSIN
An important link in D-Day history, the charming fishing port of Port en Bessin is probably best known for its international 18 hole golf course spectacularly located on the cliffs above the Landing beaches. The harbourand its surroundings are very picturesque and were often the subject of French artists Signac and Seurat and you can follow a marked trail on a self-guided walking tour of the harbour and its history. Excursions & boat rides are available to explore the nearby D-Day Landing beaches (Omaha Beach 5k) where there are various museums to visit dedicated to this wartime period and there is also the shipwreck museum on the outskirts of town which displays the artefacts found over the last 60 years whilst clearing the bay to make fishing and diving safer. The town itself is quite small with the main area centred around the port, and there's an excellent Sunday market plus a fabulous fish market where you can buy the freshest seafood caught that morning. And after spending time here you can sit in a cafe and soak up the atmosphere, enjoying the views of the very boats that brought in the fish that day. The Ibis is a no frills, good value for money hotel right in the centre alongside the port. It has a large modern bar where snacks are available all day long and comfortable, air conditioned bedrooms, all with large beds, a shower as opposed to a bath and a view out over the port or cliff behind. Shops, bars and a good choice of restaurants are within a couple of minutes' walk and the famous golf course is just a short drive up the hill.
