Ouistreham was famously codenamed Sword Beach for the D-Day Landings of June 1944. Today there are some reminders of that time including a small museum and war memorial but overall it is a holiday town with a long sandy beach, a casino, a night market on Wednesdays in summer and a great centre to discover the Normandy coast and inland attractions such as the Bayeux Tapestry or the historic city of Caen.
