Ile de France
Landmarks and Historic Buildings

Visit the magnificent white Basilica de Sacre Couér (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) in the Montmatre district, whose construction began in 1875 and was not finished until after WW1. Built from travertine stone, it constantly exudes calcite, giving it a brilliant white finish despite the weather and pollution.

Constructed on the site of the martydom of Saint Denis in the 3rd century, this Romano-Byzantine has a wonderful dome that is 200m above sea level and provides panoramic views for 50km all around.
