Jumièges Abbey

Landmarks and Historic Buildings

Founded in 654 by St Philbert, the ruins of the Jumièges Abbey are the remains of one of the oldest monasteries in the western world. Destroyed first by the Vikings and again during the Hundred Years War, pieces of the abbey were also taken after the French Revolution.

The surviving structure still casts an imposing silhouette and its easy to see why Victor Hugo named it 'the most beautiful ruin in France'. Built from beautiful white limestone, it peacefully overlooks the banks of the Seine as a place of reflection and serenity.
